Stride Rite of Wyckoff: The Positive Feedback Keeps Pouring In

Stride Rite of Wyckoff

We knew we liked the wonderful folks at the Stride Rite of Wyckoff but we are beyond thrilled to see the glowing reports pour in from our members. It is not often that such wonderfully high levels of quality and service inspire our members to send us love notes!

We used our Stride Rite in Wycoff “deal” today. Wow, the service and the selection were fantastic! I will definitely be shopping there again. Both of my daughters were measured by the owner, he then showed them where there size shoes were in the store. He brought out at least 4 pair of shoes for each girl to try on. My one daughter found a pair she liked right away, my other daughter took a little longer. The owner was patient and helpful (really fun, actually) trying to assist in finding “the right sneakers”. Before letting me make the purchase he double checked to be sure the shoes fit the girls perfectly. He let me know about the current specials too! The next time we need shoes we will be shopping at Stride Rite in Wycoff! Katie F.

I went to stride rite and it was great!!!! My 2 year old grandson got 3 pairs of beautiful shoes. Thank you so much!!!!!! Angela G.

They are wonderful! I bought my daughter shoes there, they are very good with the children and they have an amazing selection to choose from, it’s worth the trip I highly recommend them! Michele T.

I have visited this store multiple times with my children. The staff is super friendly and there selection is like no other stride rite. Zerlinda R.

Great customer service! Took both of my boys there and the woman was extremely patient and helpful. She brought out several options, wasn’t pushy, and was personable. What I think sets them apart from other stores is that you can tell its family run. They aren’t simply looking for a sale like the stores in the mall. I live 5 minutes from 2 malls and would rather drive the 20 minutes to o to this store! Jennifer K.

Great service and brought a ton of options out for my daughter based upon answering a few questions! Colleen S.

We are so glad that so many of you got in on the deal for $100 to spend on shoes and accessories for $50! We hope to be able to bring you more great deals in the future from this wonderful store!

Reporting from the Field: T.H. Visits the Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern

Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern

Since we were featuring Ho-Ho-Kus Inn & Tavern, I really wanted to experience the restaurant. Members of our team have eaten there several times and had great feedback. I was feeling a little left out, so when the opportunity arose for me to visit this past week, I was delighted.

I live in Tenafly and perhaps hadn’t made it over there before because it is on the other side of the county and I had thought that it was too far. The truth is, it is an easy ride and much closer than I thought – it’s a straight shot up Route 4 and over on to Route 17 and took about 20 minutes which is a small price to pay for such a spectacular experience!

This is the first time that I saw the restaurant at night and it is so beautiful. The Ho-Ho-Kus Inn is located in a historical building that has been completely restored and renovated. The trees outside are lit up with tiny lights and it sets the mood for a fine evening before you even walk through the door!

The owner, Laurie Hamm, met my dining companion and me at the door and gave us a tour of the restaurant. It actually houses three restaurants in one, not including the outdoor patio, which has an outdoor fireplace and outdoor seating, and looked very inviting. We started in the Tavern which is a very hip space with an exposed stone wall. The artwork on the walls is local memorabilia that has been donated by townspeople over the years.

The Tavern

The Tavern offers a very relaxed setting and a menu that offers casual fare – so if you are jonesing for a burger and fries with a beer, this is where you can get an upscale interpretation in a chic atmosphere.

The Tavern also offers a kids menu with real food in child appropriate portions. I love the experience of eating out as a family and I have always wondered why the kid’s menu is so limited – I’d much rather expose my children’s palate to wonderful food without having to order the adult versions.

Our next stop was the Library, which also has its own bar. This space is so cozy, it reminded me of a quaint Vermont B&B. There were some couples seated there, along with a few groups of girlfriends, not many open tables.

The Library Room

Our final stop was the Crystal Room, a more elegant and formal room but still very welcoming and intimate. The tables were generously spaced which makes this a perfect destination when you want to talk or are having a romantic celebration. For a Wednesday night at 8 pm, the place was pretty full, so if you visit, reservations are a must!

The Crystal Room

The staff was very attentive and pleasant. Once we ordered, Robert, the Sommelier, brought us our wine and told us about the history of the Inn, which was founded in 1790. As the resident wine expert, Robert has personally selected the 340 wines on their wine list. They are the largest sellers of Cakebread in NJ and the wine list contains fairly priced classic and boutique selections which properly accompany the modern American cuisine.

Robert went on to tell us about their active events calendar. We had just missed the dessert wine and dessert sampling earlier that evening which was a real bummer because I am strong believer that dessert should come first!

The bread basket arrived. It took a lot of self-control not to devour everything in it! The bread is baked on-site every day and it was fresh and wonderful! I started with the beet salad with brie while my dining partner had the mussels. The very generous portion of mussels were served with roasted tomatoes and an incredible sauce. It also came with two outrageous piece of garlic bread — seriously the best I have ever tasted. We used them to sop up every last bit of the sensational sauce. (It also came with a rolled napkin and a wedge of lemon so we could clean our hands before we moved on to our entrees.)

Golden Beet Salad with Brie

My friend had the Short Ribs, which are a signature dish and for good reason – they were spectacular. We quickly devoured them. I had the Pappardelle which is also made fresh daily. It was served with lobster, porcini mushrooms, and tomatoes in a butter sauce – a truly decadent treat!

Pappardelle

For dessert, we were treated with the signature banana split dessert – including caramelized bananas, fresh cream, cherries, chocolate pearl candies and heath bar ice cream. We also had the chocolate dessert, which was deliciously rich yet extremely light, and chocolate chip cookies which were utter perfection.

Chocolate Dessert

I can’t believe I lived in Bergen County for as many years as I have and have never enjoyed this incredible restaurant. I loved the charm of the historic home, the modern food and wine, the great service, and the fact that I can choose the restaurant experience to match what I am in the mood for. It was an easy, warm atmosphere and a truly lovely night out. You can bet I will be back….especially for the next dessert wine and assorted dessert tasting event! YUMMMM!

If you are still interested in grabbing a $25 for $50 worth of food and drink for dinner or a $15 for $30 worth of food and drink for lunch, you might be able to grab yours here. Quantities are limited and last I checked, it was just about sold out.

Portage & The Jewelry Box: A Treasure Trove of Trinkets for Every Budget

“Sugar and spice and everything nice” only begins to describe what us girls are made of. I believe that there is a huge checklist of female traits and each one of us received them in varying concentration to make us unique. That would certainly explain why some of us live for Manolos while others are happy to tread in Keds.

Of all the genes that define being a girl, I seem to come up short on the Shopping Gene. The men in my life have always been incredulous but the truth is, I just do not love to shop. There, I said it. In fact, I typically go to great lengths to stay out of stores unless I am under extreme duress. Like when I have to attend a wedding that night or I am leaving for vacation the next morning.

Of course, this would explain how I have never discovered Portage & The Jewelry Box on Dean Street despite the fact that I live right in Englewood and pop into town a few times a week. As we were putting together the recent feature for $15 for $30 to spend there, I was really intrigued by the photos of the shop and what looked like a treasure trove of trinkets. T.H. always looks so stylish and she has many pieces that she purchased there and so I decided it was time to check them out.

On Friday, I headed over there with my BFF (who had already purchased the $15 for $30 certificate) and we were both really impressed by the sheer abundance of inventory in the store. It is neatly laid out and presented but the range of choices is tremendous – you will be hard pressed not to find at least something in there that you absolutely love or can’t wait to give as a gift.

They have a huge selection of fun, fashion-forward jewelry that is really right on trend. They also carry handbags, wallets, scarves and sunglasses, most of which are very moderately priced. The sales help is fantastic – I can easily get overwhelmed anywhere with a cash register so, in a store chock full of fabulous finds, I seriously need a tour guide!

Patrice, the owner, and the lovely women that work in the store questioned us about the types of items we were interested in — a long, fun necklace for my friend and some fun, trendy pieces for me. They pulled out a variety of pieces for us to consider and they were respective of our budgets, which I really appreciated. It can be really frustrating to fall in love with something that you absolutely want only to discover that it is out of your price range.

It was fun to try everything on and play with different looks. They have a lot of merchandise priced under $100 which would be fun to incorporate and spruce up my wardrobe (or my daughter’s!). I absolutely love these drop earrings — they look way more expensive than they are and the colors are great, especially as we head into spring.

Drop Earrings: $35 Per Pair

They also come in black which look really rich, too.

Drop Earrings in Black & Gold

My friend had been wanting a long necklace and loved this piece, which seemed like a steal at $85.

Jewel Necklace

I thought these charmed bangles would make a fun gift and at $24-$32, you can easily wear a few together.

Charming Bangles...with Charms

My favorite piece was this adjustable leather & silver lariat for $75. I was wearing jeans and a grey sweater and it just totally completed my outfit. That’s the fun thing about accessories, they can take your look from “fine” and punch it up to “chic and trendy”.

Leather & Silver Lariat: $75

While I didn’t wear that outfit on purpose (guess I’m missing that gene, too), it was a great strategy. The next time I visit, I will wear the outfit I would most like to dress up and let Patrice style me up in the manner in which I’d like to become accustomed.

Reporting from the Field: TH Samples Tutti Giorni

When I first met with Rocco and Nicole, I was very excited to see their new restaurant and learn about the plans they had for the place. Tutti Giorni has only been open about 2 months and already my friends were telling me that the food is phenomenal with great service and an impressive wine list.

Clearly, their passion is food.  I was so inspired by their story that I couldn’t wait to try it out for myself.  I first went for dinner on a Monday night. It was so comfortable there, the lighting is great and the atmosphere is very inviting.  I don’t usually eat bread (I’m the Momma that climbed Mt. Kilimanjaro!), but I could not resist the bruschetta. And for good reason, it was delicious!

We selected a top-rated wine and it was a wonderful complement to our dinner. Rocky recommended the Gnocchi Bolognese – so we ordered that as an appetizer. Again, not something I usually go for but I decided to follow their recommendation and I couldn’t have been more pleased.  It melted in my mouth and the meat sauce was perfection.  Rocky explained that the food is from Arthur Avenue and the fish is from the Fulton Fish Market – no fooling around!  We then ordered Zuppe de Pesce and Escorole and Beans – all very delicious. I was too full for dessert, but made room for some small biscotti which were perfect little bites of happiness.

The meal was so wonderful, that I returned a second time that week with my kids and parents. There were several families there and I was happy I had made a reservation – the place was hoppin!  We again ordered the Gnocchi — I really wanted them to try it. We also ordered grilled octopus – which my daughter loved!  Between the veal parm (pounded thin on the bone), chicken and arugula, clams in a red sauce and an eggplant parm…we were all extremely well fed. The service was great and the restaurant had a great vibe.

I may not be the biggest foodie but Tutti Giorni gets rave reviews from my family and me. I love eating at restaurants where the food is worth every bite. I also loved that it was a great family destination but also quieter after 7:30pm so appropriate for date night too.

And, if you take advantage of this great deal, you just might find me at the corner table happily eating my gnocchi and sipping some vino!

Pain Free Anti-Aging at Bella Tu MedSpa: Report from the Field

As we worked with Bella Tu MedSpa to develop the offer we currently have available on our website, I was really intrigued by their approach to anti-aging.  As a woman who has celebrated her 40th birthday for a few years in a row now, I am just beginning to notice that the face that looks back at me in the mirror has some undeniable evidence of the years ticking by. So you can imagine that when Bella Tu suggested that a SuburbanMomma staffer come in and see what they are all about, I was more than happy to oblige.

The spa itself is a true MedSpa with equal emphasis on the “Med” as on the “Spa”. It is run under the auspices of Dr. Hakan Usal, a Board Certified Plastic Surgeon and member of both the Society of Plastic Surgeons and The Society of Aesthetic Plastic Surgeons. They offer several treatments that I have never heard of including the Laser Genesis Skin Therapy and the Dermaplane Facial, which we currently have featured on SuburbanMomma for 50% off.

The MedSpa is really quite lovely. It is located right on Main Street in downtown Nyack (not too far from the Palisades Parkway), a really charming area that I’d love to spend more time in.  I was warmly greeted by Kim, the manager, when I arrived.

Bella Tu MedSpa

I elected to sample the Laser Genesis Skin Therapy treatment because of what it promises: to treat wrinkles, large pores, skin texture and redness in a non-invasive way with no downtime. As the name suggests, it is a laser treatment that penetrates deep into the skin to stimulate the natural production of collagen which not only improves the appearance of your skin immediately, it also helps fend off and slow down signs of aging into the future.

The treatment began with a hydrating facial in a very relaxing treatment room complete with dim lighting and calming spa music. Margaret, who administered the treatment, is actually an RN as well as a certified Medical Aesthetician.  She was extremely knowledgeable and explained the procedure as she gently exfoliated and thoroughly cleaned my face and neck with lovely products that smelled wonderful and felt luscious.

One of the Several Treatment Rooms at Bella Tu Spa

Next came the fun part, outsmarting Father Time. Margaret covered my eyes with warm gauze and eyeshades and then began to pulse the light on my entire face. It felt like a very small sun lamp that emits heat. I could feel the warmth deep into the layers of my skin and I could feel my skin tightening right there on the spot. It is not painful or even uncomfortable. By the time Margaret was done, my entire face felt tighter and younger. She completed the treatment with some vitamin C serum, eye cream and moisturizer. The treatment took about an hour and when I got up to look in the mirror, I was really surprised that there was absolutely no redness, no bruising, nothing. My skin just looked good and even 7 hours later, I can still feel the tightness which is expected to last for a few months. I did love the instant gratification of it but I also love knowing that collagen productions will actively be boosted over the course of the next two weeks so I am looking forward to all the goodness that fresh collagen can do for my appearance. I also liked the fact that this is not a treatment that has to be done in a large series to see results. You can do it just a few times a year to beat back signs of aging. Of course, if you suffer from rosacea or have recent scaring, you might want to toss in an extra treatment or two given how effective the laser is.

While I was there, I also got the 411 on the Dermaplane Facial as well which is an extreme exfoliating facial that is gentler to your skin than microdermabrasion.  The Dermaplane is actually a small blade that is gently scraped against your skin. It is extremely effective at removing the top layer of dead skin making way for the healthy layer of fresh skin to emerge. As an added bonus, it also whisks away any fine, fuzzy hair you may have on your chin or cheeks. While it originally sounded scary, I learned that it is actually quite gentle and also pain free.

As much as us girls love to look our best, we are also huge fans of all things “pain free” too!

To try out the Laser Genesis Facial or Dermaplane Facial, see the SuburbanMomma deal for 50% off here: http://www.suburbanmomma.com/deals/bella-tu-medspa-nyack-929

Incredibly Dewy Skin: Julianne’s Trip to Spa Dew

Our very own Julianne was the lucky member of our team who got to visit Spa Dew and sample their signature Dew Scrub & Swedish Massage and Express Facial.  Here is what she reported from the field….

Spa Dew

Even before I walked through the door, I knew I had arrived at a spa thanks to the delicious aromas that seemed to rise up and meet me at the door. Like a Pavlovian response, my body began to relax just by smelling that sensational spa smell. The facility is large and bright and incredibly clean.

Jasmine, the owner of Spa Dew, was there to greet me in the lobby. She escorted me back to the changing room and provided a locker complete with key, a fresh robe and towels.  I had 15 minutes before my treatment was scheduled to begin so I used the showers, steam room and sauna.  All were clean and smelled delicious! My personal favorite was the eucalyptus steam. I could feel my pores opening and my whole body relaxing in the heat.

Jenny came to get me when it was time for my 80 minute Dew Scrub and Massage.  For this treatment, you lay flat on a table in the wet area and every inch of your body scrubbed with a soft loofah, in a gentle circular motion.  From time to time, you are rinsed with an abundance of warm water which felt truly wonderful.  My favorite part was when Jenny shampooed and conditioned my hair — I don’t think I have ever had a better scalp massage in my entire life! It was glorious.

Jenny was careful to ask me about the type of pressure I’d like for the massage so that it was just right. I have had massages previously where I was too embarrassed to direct the masseuse so I was really glad that she checked with me first.  She used several types of lotions and oils and by the time she was finished, I practically did not recognize my own skin.  It was smoother and silkier than I have ever felt.  Not only was dead skin eradicated completely but body was hydrated and glowing (and smelling quite delicious).

Next came my Express Facial with Tiffany. I was escorted to a lovely little treatment room that smelled like rose petals. As Tiffany put the steamer near my face,  she started to cleanse it. Tiffany was gentle with extractions as she inspected my pores and made sure nothing was in my face that shouldn’t have been there.  Every product she used smelled better than the next. It was aromatherapy heaven.

Spa Dew uses a beautiful line of products from Aromatherapy Associates. Made from the purest natural ingredients, they create blends to enhance the oil’s inherent properties which turn them into rich, beautifully scented products with all the healing properties of natural oils and extracts. They are truly luscious and luxuriant.

To complete the facial, Tiffany painted on heavy mask which covered my whole face including eyes. Once the mask hardened, she lifted it off in one quick motion and applied moisturizer.  It’s not every day that I get 2 whole hours of decadent indulgence at a spa but this wasn’t just about a relaxing time…it was about feeling transformed when I left. For the remainder of the night, I just kept rubbing my forearms and marveling at incredibly soft my skin felt.  (Seriously, next time I visit, you can be darn sure that I will have a date afterwards!)

I really loved this spa. It was so calming and soul-nourishing it was as if the rest of the world did not exist.  I left completely rejuvenated and refreshed. This was also my first experience with a Korean-style body scrub and I am totally hooked! I cannot wait to go back when it is time to slough off winter. Thank you, Spa Dew!!

———

Julie, we are so glad you had such a wonderful experience. P.S. We are jealous as hell ;-)

(Don’t tell the team, but everyone is getting a trip to Spa Dew for the holidays! After hearing your recount of the day, we knew we had to go to!)

Julianne Treats Her Tootsies

What a tough life I have. I walk into work and our founder asks if I would mind going to Sole Revival for a 90 minute treatment. My coworker, Joy, was supposed to sample the spa, but due to a last-minute rescheduled meeting, couldn’t make it. Deborah said that I would be testing out the 60 minute reflexology massage and the 30 minute detox. Well, oookay, if I have to!

I headed out Sole Revival Reflexology in River Edge which is actually quite close to our office in Englewood. I walked in, and Catherine and Eric were waiting to greet me. The smell of lavender filled my nose. The space was nice and open, the front of the store has large open windows bringing lots of light into the spa/studio. You could tell the place was immaculate, not a dust bunny in sight.

All reflexology sessions start with a soothing foot bath, foot cleansing message, followed by a hot towel wrap while sitting on oversized pedicure chairs that were probably big enough to fit two people. When it came time for my reflexology, the lights were dimmed and tranquil music was played in the background – not a bad way to break up the workday! Eric started by using lavender oil on his hands and slowly waving them around my head so the scent would slowly trigger to my senses. I went into full-on relaxation mode.

Eric performed my reflexology for the first hour. His hands were very soft and delicate. He payed attention to my neck shoulders and hands too for the first 15 minutes and then turned his attention for the rest of the time to my legs and feet. I was so relaxed I almost feel asleep, which I never do. When it came to hitting the organs on my feet, Eric’s hands were powerful and strong. I had some tender points on my left foot and Eric was able to tell me what part of body that was!

The 60 minutes had passed and now it was time for my detox. I really did not know what to expect, but Catherine couldn’t wait to set me up and explain. I sat in another cozy cushy chair and put my feet in a soaking tub while I wore a magnet around my wrist. Catherine began to explain the toxic things that we ingest everyday; pesticides, herbicides, coloring, additives, preservatives and chemicals through water, air, and food. The water was clear from the start and 30 minutes later it was reflecting lovely shades of black and brown! Those colors indicate that I was detoxifying from my liver, cellular debris, and heavy metals. I had just been traveling and Catherine said that this was a perfect time to get a detox. I really had a great experience at Sole Revival Reflexology Spa, and I simply can’t wait to go back.

Makeup by Julez- This Glam Doctor Makes House Calls

Makeup by Julez

Get a Personal House Call from Makeup by Julez for Just $40: http://www.suburbanmomma.com/deals/makeup-by-julez-englewood-869

The power of artfully applied makeup never ceases to amaze me. My own version of do-it-yourself makeup includes foundation, translucent powder, eyeliner, mascara and a touch of lipstick.  I have completely given up even trying to apply more than one shade of eye shadow.  I can cover my lids with a single shade no problem, but try and add on an accent and I look like a hot mess. Blending, layering, it’s all a mystery to me. The smoky part never lands in the right place and I wind up looking like a 2nd grade art project. I remember going to the make up counter where they give you a coloring map that looks like a face and the sales girl shows you how each color in the palette goes on, making it look so easy. How many times have I stood there with that coloring map and felt so ridiculous that I could not replicate what the make up counter girl did in just a few quick strokes?  I am resigned to my simple routine and leave the properly applies make up to the trained professionals.

SuburbanMomma was introduced to Julez of Makeup by Julez, by one of our fabulous customers, Morgan, who has been using Julez for special occasion makeup for years and just couldn’t say enough good things about her.  Julez would not allow us to take Morgan’s word for it. She wanted to come and apply make up for me before we finalized the details of her feature.  Julez has a studio in Englewood but will also come to you which I personally find supremely convenient and fits right in with the hair, makeup, wardrobe succession.

She arrived right on time with her full make up suitcase (much to the delight of my seven year-old who was positively mesmerized) — she travels with everything thing she could possibly need, of course.  First, she consulted about my plans for the day (my daughter’s birthday party followed by a bat mitzva party in the city) and asked me about the look that I’d like her to achieve. Then, she went to work creating a look that would work well during the day and transition easily into the evening. Julez was trained by Nars and is truly passionate about the artistry of makeup.  Her mission is to bring back the glamour of the experience and the effect of having makeup properly applied.  At the end of my very relaxing half hour, my skin looked dewy and even (which lasted all day and all evening without air-brushing), my lips were shiny and sexy (if I do say so myself) and my eyes so demure that I found myself practicing smizing in the mirror. The overall effect was extremely natural which was exactly what I had requested.

I love that makeup not only transforms how you look, but also how you feel. And I love how affordable Julez’s house calls are because I’d much rather put myself in her capable hands than my own when it comes to applying makeup!

Thank you, Julez!
